Taipei, Taiwan, November 27, 2006 -- Areca Technology Corporation, today announced that its Serial ATA ll RAID controller has been supported the SGPIO function. Major chassis/case vendor custom's backplanes has supported the SGPIO function in its Min SAS 4i connector. Areca ensures the highest level of interoperability by designing according to industry standards and accurately testing system components in its PCI-X/PCIe RAID Controller. The Min SAS 4i connector SAS/SATA-II backplane with enclosure SGPIO support, ideal for cost-sensitive and high reliability system designs.
Serial General Purpose Input Output (SGPIO) is a method to serialize general purpose IO signals. SGPIO defines the communication between an initiator (e.g. a host bus adapter) and a target (e.g. a backplane holding disk drives). The target typically converts the output signals into multiple parallel LED signals and provides the input signals from general purpose inputs.
SGPIO typically accompanies a set of high-speed serial storage interfaces like SAS or SATA on a wide connector(e.g. an internal Min SAS 4i connector). SGPIO support is provided as per SFF-8485 specification for Serial GPIO (SGPIO) Bus. SGPIO is defined by SFF8485.
One backplane manages 4-port to connect up to four SAS or SATA devices. The number of drives supported can easily be increased by a factor of 4 by adding similar backplanes to a maximum of 24 drives for ARC-1280ML. The SGPIO function has supported in all Areca RAID controller card with Min SAS 4i internal connector. The board included:
-
Areca 1231ML/1261ML/1280ML Series (IOP341 PCI-Express 12/16/24-Port SATA ll) RAID controller
-
Areca 1230ML/1260ML series (IOP333 PCI-Express 12/16-Port SATA ll) RAID controller
-
Areca ARC-1160ML2 series (IOP331 PCI-X 16-Port SATA ll) RAID controller
-
Areca 1680 (IOP348 PCI-Express SAS) RAID controller
